Annual Picnic in the Park

The Kenosha County Parks is holding its annual picnic Aug. 24 at Petrifying Springs County Park, near the Biergarten at the south end of the park. The event, which starts at 1:30 p.m., is free.

The daylong event features food trucks, five bounce houses, many performances including a fire breathing act, and what is anticipated to be the largest performance of "Baby Shark" in the county. The festivities will culminate in a fireworks show at dusk.

Fire departments trains for hazmat situation

When a container of anhydrous ammonia sprung a leak over the state line this past spring, the poisonous gas that spread caused injuries to motorists and firefighters and forced the closure of schools in the area. About a dozen people found themselves in the hospital from exposure to the gas.

In an effort to be prepared for any accident involving the chemical commonly used as a fertilizer in farms around Somers, the Fire Department included it in its annual hazardous material training held June 4 on the Jerry Smith farm.

Highways H and KR updates

Traffic patterns on Highway H and KR are scheduled to change Aug. 10 as part of the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) roads project linked to Foxconn.

Highway KR, to the west of Highway H, is scheduled to reopen.

Traffic on Highway KR, between East Frontage Road and Highway H, will shift to the north onto the newly paved westbound lanes while crews work to reconstruct the eastbound lanes.

Access to 100th Ave. and 113th Ave. from Highway KR, will not be available during this stage of construction.

I-94 Project Update

Highway KR under I-94 is now open.

Highway A under I-94 will close Monday Aug. 5 and Tuesday Aug. 6 from 5:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

On Saturday August 10, Highway KR will reopen from Lake Michigan to Union Grove. At that time the intersecions of Highway KR and 100th Ave. as well as 113th Ave. will be closed. These intersections will remain closed until the east bound lanes are constructed, which is expected to be completed in late October or early November.

Fire Department holds training

The Somers Fire and Rescue Department used a house purchased last year by Kenosha County on the east side of Highway 31, just north of Highway JR, for a training exercise on Sunday July 29, 2019. The property was the last private home surrounded by Petrifying Springs Park land.

Somers opens cooling site

The Somers Fire Station is available to residents who want to get away from the heat from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. until Sunday July 21.

With the high heat and humidity over the region, for your saftey, make sure to drink plenty of water and reduce your exposure to the heat.

Long-term closure of Highway KR annouced

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation has scheduled to begin a long-term closure of Highway KR between Highway H and 100th Avenue this coming Monday evening, July 22. The closure will last about a month depending on weather.

This is being done to accommodate reconstruction of the intersection of KR and H.

The recommended detour is Highway H to Highway A to the I-94 frontage roads.
