Fire Safety Education:  The Power of Empowerment

Historically, people become conscious of the need of fire safety whenever a spectacular fire grabs the newspaper headlines.  Often, the damage and losses of property and human life could have been avoided or reduced if there had been a home assessment that recognized ways to improve fire safety, and if people were aware of how to react during an emergency.

It is the goal of the Somers Fire & Rescue Department to pro-actively offer public education programs in our community that help prevent home fires as well as how to react during an emergency.  We fulfill this role by committing time and resources to reaching out to all ages in our community, preschool to seniors, with programs that will empower people to help themselves and others save lives.

Our Community Outreach

During the course of a year, the Department offers various public education presentations through schools, daycare visits, and station tours. Annually, the Department visits Somers Elementary, Busy Bees Daycare, Parkside Daycare, Cornerstone Academy, Shoreland Lutheran High School and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.  Each presentation is tailored to the specific age group and is generally comprised of an instructional speech and demonstration (smoke house, mock accident). Station tours are provided to groups and organizations upon request, typically Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and other community groups. During station tours, groups are given a fire safety speech, allowed to see the fire trucks, shown equipment and given fire safety material to take home.

The Department provides fire safety education to approximately 1000 children and adults each year. Most of the education materials distributed during presentations are donated or obtained at no cost though the State of Wisconsin Insurance Companies and other private groups.

We welcome everyone in our community to contact us should you have an interest in participating in our programs.
